Reborn Marathon 國際講座-The Global UI/UX Gathering — 異國職場中的UI/UX設計
Reborn Marathon typically would invite UX UI experienced professionals from different cultural backgrounds to reflect on their career journey. We were honored to have Muhammed Mustapha ( product designer ) and Nita Wu ( who currently works in the streaming service industry ) for this online yet interactive event. Kindly note that this article was written based on the presentation slides.
Your case study shall be self-explanatory when you carry out storytelling, and there’s a need to dig into what kinds of assumptions you might have in mind before conducting the research, it could be business assumptions or assumptions about possible target audience or specific persona, and they have to be carefully verified. ( Is this assumption true or false? and why is this the case? ) It’s also nice to map out all the constraints while conducting research ( for instance, didn’t manage to have interviewees from diverse sociodemographic, didn’t test whether certain features are possible due to it is time-consuming or the team has decided to narrow down the focus, etc ) Lastly, it’s hella important that you can nicely demonstrate that you can contextualize the problem after problem definition ( i.e. what are the stakeholders involved in this business model ? what are the current pain points ? Is whatever pain points we perceived the same as actual pain points people encountered ? )
As a designer, there are couples of engrossing issues you need to be aware of — — (A) that user problems and engineer problems are not entirely the same thing. Designers are expected to come up with a solution that engineers can make use of, as what happened frequently in the workplace is that the actual implementation does not necessarily mirror what you designed. Many hands-off tools such as Zeplin, Marvel, and Invision ( as stated on the slide above ) can help to bridge the gap by addressing the information asymmetry while communicating those concepts and concerns. (B) When you are getting more experienced and senior, quite likely you will be shouldering the responsibility of selling ideas to stakeholders. The founder of Taelor ( a clothing rental subscription platform for males ) Anya Cheng has published her second book-為自己再勇敢一次 , adequately expressing how to properly carry out upward communication ( 向上溝通 ) and drawing extensively on many different scenarios to vividly illustrate effective communication.
Nita basically stated how UX design cannot live without technology trend so keeping yourself updated by reading or watching documentaries are a matter of cardinal importance, as technology trend normally leads to behavioral change in the users. Muhammed also talked about possible frustrations people may face when taking up the designer role: the general public often has a misconception about design — they simply refer to design as UI but the design is far more than UI — Design is about understanding users, and a grasp of psychology is often essential.
Nita also highlighted the difference between user design and product design, as for product design the stakeholders need to have domain knowledge in business to successfully sell the product, not just about how pleasant the user experience may turn out to be. This also brings back my memory about how Udemy has a well-known ( and probably best-selling course as well ) in product management titled Become a Product Manager | Learn the Skills & Get the Job, which can draw a broader picture about how to put ourselves into other people’s shoes in terms of cultivating a business mindset in the field of product.
